This is sort of an off-topic subject, but does anyone else think it's amazing that Darth Maul has somehow seemingly become the mascot of the Prequel Trilogy? After years of being dead, they introduced his brother Savage Opress in the Clone Wars cartoon and made him a major recurring villain, then brought Maul himself back as the big villain in the Season 4 finale (and made a huge promotional deal about it too), then had Maul become a major villain in Season 5, got a canon comic explaining what happened to him afterwards, reappeared in Rebels as a recurring villain again for the last time (meaning he is one of the few characters from the Prequel Trilogy who we see managed to survive into the events of the Original Trilogy), and now he is the very first Prequel era character shown in the Battlefront II trailer in order to show that the Prequel Trilogy will be represented in the game.
All this from a character who only about 15 minutes of screentime in his first appearance in Episode I, had only two fight scenes, had about a grand total of two or three lines, had zero backstory and no real personality other then "evil", was never mentioned in any of the other two prequel films afterwards, and was ultimately intended to be nothing more then a throwaway evil henchman.
Ah yes, I believe we refer to that as the "Boba Fett" effect. You know, where the mere act of looking cool is enough to garner popularity (remember, Fett had less than 7 minutes of screen time over 3 movies, *and that includes the extended special editions*, and to quote a popular YouTube series: with 5 lines in the original Trilogy, and one of them was "AAAAAAHHH!!!")
But, in all fairness to Maul does deserve some recognition. Like Fett, his design is rather unique and helps him stand out, and even with the bare minimum of dialogue he's still probably the most memorable character introduced in the prequels. To top it off, his fights were the highlights of "Phantom".
Fun fact: On Rolling Stones "50 Best Star Wars Characters", Darth Maul is #10 ranking higher than characters such as C3PO, Chewbacca, and Mace Windu.
So who do you all think will become the Maul and Boba for The Force Awakens era? Captain Phasma?
Eh, probably not. I mean, it's obvious that Disney was trying to intentionally create a new Boba Fett with Captain Phasma, but it failed miserably because, despite all the hype and promotion she got, Phasma did absolutely nothing except get literally thrown into the trash. Remember, Boba Fett and Darth Maul were never intended to be the big, breakout characters and iconic symbols of the Star Wars franchise they are now and were just supposed to be throwaway villains, it happened by accident and thanks to fan interest. You can't force a character to become a big breakout star, because the audience can always tell when the producers are trying to force a character to become one, so it feels unnatural and it never works out.
Besides, the Boba Fett/Darth Maul of the Sequel Trilogy has already arrived.
I am SOOOOO Happy that they brought Nym back into Canon. I played the Starfighter games a lot when I was a kid. Jedi Starfighter in the PS2 was the best back then.
To 40 years of kicking galactic ass in style
Meanwhile, more behind the scenes drama in the upcoming Han Solo movie ensues.
If Episode 8 is just like Empire I will be done with Star Wars.
EA strikes again. Turns out Battlefront 2 forces you to either grind for over 40 hours to unlock the hero characters, or pay real money in micro-transactions to quickly unlock them. After EA's defense of this became the most downvoted comment in Reddit history, EA is cutting costs by 75%.
Battlefield 1>Battlefront 2.
Battlefront 2 (2005) -> Battlefront 2 (2017), right??! :HEHEHEHEHE!!!
Actually I have nothing against the new Battlefront game and wish it well and hope it is an enjoyable experience.. Honestly stuff like if the older games were better or not doesn't really matter to me, I just want the current Battlefront games to be fun. It's very disappointing to me, as a consumer, that EA would try to pull a stunt like this, but at least they have corrected it almost immediately.
I wouldn't have any problems with the new one, if not for the fact the loot crate thing was pulled, same with heroes.
I'm not gonna give any money to a game that I feel promotes unfair business practices, even if said game is really good, not when I'm currently playing a game with far more content at launch, more enjoyable MP, and a more enjoyable campaign.
That being said, if somebody's got the game, great for them, hope they get their money's worth out of it.
Well, this was an eventful week.
The Battlefront II thing got INTENSE. People just kept finding new dirt on the whole situation. First of all, even though they reduced the credits needed to buy heroes, they also apparently reduced the credits you get through normal gameplay. In addition, if you played Arcade mode too much, you would get a cooldown on earning credits for anywhere between 3 and 24 hours.
I haven't seen the gaming community this upset in a LONG time. Even people who didn't seem to care about Battlefront were getting in on the joke. EA tried to do damage control as much as they could, but it was essentially just adding fuel to the fire.
Now it looks like they finally got the message. Today, they posted this on Twitter.
Looking back, it's a little ironic how their whole marketing campaign at the start was "Hey, look! We're fixing all the problems you had with the first game!" but now I think this game has stirred up more rage and negative press than the first one did. We'll have to wait and see how this affects Battlefront II and multiplayer games as a whole.
Welp, one thing for sure, this is a HUGE pushback against micro transactions in games, and means that EA is screwed if they try it for sure.
Secondly, Battlefront 2 is finished. The negative press alone will kill this game on launch. Not even Destiny 2 was this big of a ripoff, and I have mixed feelings toward that game.
