For about... seven years straight, Super Smash Bros. Melee was the go-to game for me and my siblings. Hearing the news (and seeing the teaser trailer) for SSBB was so hype. Playing the game was something else entirely. I don't even know where the copy for it is now.

The earliest memory I have of Smash Bros. is the 64 version, and seeing Donkey Kong roll off the top of Peach's Castle. Good times.

But yeah, we still play SSBM from time to time. We would play it with more regularity, but when there's no one else to unleash our mad skills on, it becomes more casual play than competitive.

I've never played this game, but I've heard great things about it. I feel deprived :(

Brawl is pretty cheap online right now. Not sure about Melee though. If none of those are options right now, the N64 game is available legally on the Vizzed website.

Am I insane for liking Brawl the best? What was so bad about it?

You're not insane. People dislike the character balance, story mode, and how much slower and floatier the gameplay is. It's not bad at all, just not amazing like Melee.

Apples and oranges, man. It was a very different taste of Smash, and to many (especially in the competitive scene) it was a step down. It took away many of the technical elements of the previous games (L-canceling, reflective shields, single air-dodges to name a few) and made it much more casual. I played it for a good year myself, but it never really clicked. Not like the previous two did.

So to each their own! Just... don't remind me how they cut Mewtwo because of ridiculous marketing reasons. Many, many stupid decisions made because they were trying to turn SSBB into a giant merchandising billboard for all the Wii games.

    Both are very great though.

Brawl is the best. It has the most characters, the most balance, the most content, and it even has online play. Melee would have been tied with Brawl, but the Gamecube controller was a poor fit for the title. N64 is fun, but it lacks the content that its sequels have. But the first game was an experiment with a low budget, so those aren't true faults.

Nope. Just tournament play until the Unity Ruleset disbanded.

No offense, but I think tourney rules can be absolutely stupid. For example, I once watched a tournament video with this rule: in order to use certain special attacks, they have to be part of a combo that contains a minimum three (3) attacks. Like, if you wanted to use Thunder with Pikachu, you would need to use either some strong attacks or smash attacks before executing the command, otherwise the player would be penalized. It sounds like too much trouble to pull off a single move. I understand it's meant to curb move-spamming, but there are other ways to enforce rules for it.

While I can agree SSBB is jam-packed & bigger in pretty much all aspects (compared to its predecessors), it is definitely not the most balanced... at least, when it comes to the competitive aspect. Did you know it's almost impossible to win tournament matches as Ganondorf because of how terribly designed he is? A high-level-play Ganny versus a high-level-play anything else, and the odds are immediately stacked against you. This includes Zelda, Link, and whomever else is down there on the tier list.
Meta Knight is also the first character in the series' history to be banned from tourney play, due to how unquestionably broken he is. Sakuraiiiiiiii

Comparatively - I've seen people wreck tournaments with the lowest tier characters from SSBM (Kirby, Bowser, etc.). The skill needed to play those characters versus the popular Fox, Marth, etc. picks is astonishing; you need to rely on some heavy mindgames, and have to read heavily into your opponent, but it's very possible to win in comparison... The biggest reason for this is because of the technical aspects of the game.

SSBB has few technical aspects, if any. For instance~ SSBB Ganny cannot L-cancel his aerial moves, therefore when he hits the ground he suffers serious frame-lag. This is his biggest hindrance, and one of the reasons tourney-favorite Captain Falcon has become so much worse in SSBB. But SSBM's Bowser can L-cancel his aerial attacks, allowing him to almost completely bypass the frame-lag once he hits the ground, getting him back into the action much faster.

    Also...

What kind of tournament were you watching ? XD This is one of the strangest tournament styles I've ever heard. It had to have been a casual/experimental set-up for a party or something. Don't confuse this for high-level tournament set-ups, they would ever make rules like this.
The only rules for official tournaments are the number of stocks (4), the Stock Match time limit (7~8 minutes), no items (picking up random items as Peach is fine), and what stages you can pick/counterpick. Everything else is fair game, including spamming projectiles like Mario's fireballs or Fox's lasers or something... though that practice is frowned upon, naturally. Not very exciting to see Fox spam his B move for days just to get cheap %, many players prefer hand-to-hand and trying to string together combos. It can get pretty hype.

Ohhh Smash Brothers, what have you done to me.

I'm not sure. It seemed pretty professional, but I cannot remember because I watched the video two years ago. If I can find it, I will share it.

I own melee and Brawl. My friend has Smash Bros on N64 but some reason I can never get used to the controls. I really like Melee and Brawl both, but some reason I tend to play Brawl more. More stages, more characters, custom stages (Even though that's not perfectly incredible.), and I liked the story mode (I was cheap and got all characters except for Ness and Sonic from it XD.) Also, my friends play Brawl way more. Though a lot of Melee stages are very memorable and anger me that they weren't in Brawl. Melee also seems like it has way harder difficulty and more techniques to use. Also, I like Final Destination in Melee better. So I'll actually end up having to say I like the games equal. If I wanted the Melee stuff in Brawl though I could always hack it. But I choose not to because even though it's safe I don't wanna risk it and I'm not that kind of person. The only thing I would mod is Minecraft. Maybe if it's possible, I would also texture mod Kaiju combat maybe.

I picked Brawl mainly because it has some of my favorite fighters in the series (Lucas, Olimar, and Wolf are my homies), although I do agree that Melee is the better game. I kicked all kinds of butt as Peach in Melee. My friends would mock my when I picked her, I would mock them as I slapped them in the face with a frying pan. ^-^

I'm really looking forward to see how the next game turns out, and whether or not the 3DS version is going to suck. (Please don't...)

I've only played Brawl. And I really like it. I've always wanted to play melee, but I never did.

I just like to have fun. I think Brawl does that well. I don't really like competitive play all that much.
